For those who don’t care for Romeo and Juliet, Verona doesn’t come to mind. After all, all of Italy is romantic and inviting for lovers. However, because of the famous play set in this city, Verona has been celebrating love like no other place in the world. You can visit Juliet’s balcony, where the first kiss between Romeo and Juliet takes place, and under which you can touch Juliet’s statue which is said to bring luck in love. And in the walls outside Juliet’s house visitors can leave their letters and love notes.
A beloved destination both by the Portuguese people and visitors, Sintra is a unique and extremely romantic and mystical place. The ivy covered forests surround attractions such as Quinta da Regaleira, where poets like Lord Byron used to dwell. To complete the picture, you must stay at Quinta das Lágrimas, where a tragic love story took place between an ancient king of Portugal, D.Pedro, and his lover, Inês de Castro — who came to be known in Portugal as the woman who became queen after death. This is the most celebrated couple in Portugal’s history and folklore and their story can be found in monuments and gardens.
This may not seem like an obvious choice for a couple in love because of the colder climate and lack of sunlight, but Edinburgh is an extremely romantic place: the habitual mist give it a mysterious aura, the rain invites you into a cozy cafe, and the architecture looks out of a fairy tale. Need we say more?
Leiria, in the Center region of Portugal, is well known as being a romantic place for its history and folklore. There is a folk tale said to have taken place in the castle of Leiria called The Miracle of the Roses — about D. Dinis, the poet king known for its love of life and pleasure, and his queen, Saint Queen Isabel, a patron for the poor. The queen wanted to give the poor loaves of bread, and carried them in her apron. But the king did not like this. He asked her what she was doing. She said she carried roses in her apron. The king demanded to see them and, as the queen dropped her apron, the bread turned to roses that fell at their feet.
Leiria is worth it for its gothic castle towering over a small town, the sycamores leaning of the river Liz and the natural beauty of the beaches Pedrogão and S.Pedro de Moel.
Grinda is a Swedish island, belonging to the Stockholm Archipelago. It isn’t that far from the coast and it is actually a nature reserve that you can reach by boat. Excluding the fact that this destination is set in nature, where there is peace and beauty, why is it romantic? Precisely because it is isolated. What better place than an island to enjoy moments together swimming and hiking.
