Portugal has become a surf haven over the last few years. Comparable to the likes of Australia and often called the California of Europe, this small gem of a sunny country has much in common with these other surf destinations…
Not only does it offer golden sand beaches straight out of your dreams and incredible world-famous giant waves in Nazaré, Portuguese culture really hits home with surfers.
The Portuguese are incredibly chill but also very civil. They will go out of their way to help tourists and travelers, often speaking bits of English, Spanish, French and sign gestures and body language just to tell them where the nearest cafe or gas station is. Yes, it’s true. Take it from us, Portuguese people really appreciate those who fall in love with Portugal (and even more those who give it a try at the language).
Being one of the safest countries in the world (the 6th safest, according to Global Peace Index) also makes it a great destination for solo travelers and surfers.
We know you’re here because you already know you want to surf the generous ocean at Portugal’s doorstep. Here at Start Adventure, we are Portuguese… So we’re here to give you inside knowledge, from a local perspective, on the best hidden gems around.
Do consider the fact that these beaches were selected out of seclusion, and so they might not be the creme of the creme of waves, like Nazaré or Supertubos in Peniche.
You’ll be spending time in Figueira da Foz for sure, located in the Center region of Portugal, a magnet for surfers who are in the know.
At Buarcos, find the longest right point break of Europe, truly unique and satisfying.

It’s small, it’s quiet, it’s unheard of. But the waves are strong in this one, on a good day and with the right conditions. If you’re looking for solitude and a reliable sea, try this one.

This is in Peniche, where you’ll probably be drawn to anyway. It’s a great alternative to other more popular beaches if you want to spend some time on your own. You’ll find reliable and consistent waves.

These waves aren’t usually huge… unless they are. It’s not difficult to surf here and beginners might be drawn to Furadouro, but it’s also been known to gift surfers with big, satisfying waves. This beach has been facing some difficulties, getting shorter as it is claimed by the sea, and local surfers have been trying to raise awareness for it.

This beach is amazing. The waves are superb. And yeah, local surfers are aware of it and you will probably won’t be alone with Neptune, but it’s not crowded — surely not as crowded as other surf spots in Algarve, where foreigners are looking for all the hot spots.
Come surf under the towering golden cliffs of Algarve, protecting you from the wind.

Located 10 km north of Figueira da Foz, Quiaios is a big, long beach. The size of it allows for space, peace and quiet. It’s also very beautiful, with a true feeling of lush, wild, natural beauty.

Lots of beaches in Madeira are very hard to get to, and often dangerous. Be careful with falling rocks, twisty paths and harsh weather. That being said, Fajã da Areia is rather accessible but the waves aren’t that consistent or that easy.

Graciosa island is small and clean, meaning literally gracious. The Azores aren’t crowded, especially in winter… the smaller the island, the more beautiful, wild and remote it feels. Unfortunately, the weather is often stormy in the Azores and might play against you.

Welcome to heaven, the Azores. Skip over a low wall with your surfboard and find yourself in a smooth, black sand beach. Here you can enjoy some great waves in the deep blue Atlantic ocean with a clear view of the highest mountain in all of Portugal, Pico, in Pico island.
